Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center (OVRC)
line

The OVRC is an online library of topics related to current events and controversial issues.

When to use the OVRC:

  • For information on current social issues or various sides of an issue for a persuasive essay
  • For examples of persuasive essays
  • For a variety of sources (books, magazines, newspapers, statistical tables, court cases, photographs) for a social issues assignment

Directions to Access OVRC:

  • Go to http://www.monroecc.edu/go/library
  • Click "Find articles and online databases" then select the Opposing
        Viewpoints Resource Center link
  • If off-campus, click "Access from Home" and follow directions to log-in
  • How to Search the OVRC:

    1. Browse Issues Search

    The OVRC homepage lists the most commonly researched issues in alphabetical order. Examples include:

               Abortion
               Administration of Criminal Justice
               Adoption
               Affirmative Action
               AIDS (Disease)

    Simply click on the issue of interest and a list of results will appear.

    Click on the title of the article of interest and the full article text will appear.
    Printing and e-mailing functions also appear on the left of the page.

    In order to find different types of sources, use the tabs listed at the top of the page.

    2. Basic Subject Search

    If the issue of interest does not appear in the alphabetical listing, the Basic Search window can be used at the top of the OVRC homepage. Simply insert the search term of interest and use the following pull down menu options to further define your search:

  • Search by Subject (default option)
  • Search by Keyword
  • Search by Full-text
  • A list of results will appear. (See #1, Browse Issues Search)

    3. Advanced Search

    This feature allows users to combine terms to pinpoint very specific subjects.  Users can also search by the type of document or by date.

    Type search terms into the fields, select the type of search.
    (Title/Headline, Source, Author, Subject, and Full Text)
