  • Agropolis Museum - This site presents information on Food and Agricultures throughout the world.

  • A Book of Gode Cookery - A compilation of medieval recipes, along with diverse facts facts on food and feasting in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

  • Chocolate: The Exhibition - From The Field Museum, Chicago, Illinois, everything you ever wanted to know about chocolate including information about how it is grown, history, and tips for eating and making chocolate.

  • Culinary History: Selected Internet Sites - From the New York Public Library Culinary History Research Guide a list of selected Internet sites covering different aspects of culinary history including beverages and international cookery.

  • Culinary History Timeline - Social history, manners & menus throughout the U.S and world.

  • Cultural Aspects of Foods - Links from the Food Resource Home Page at Oregon State University.

  • Feeding America: The Historic American Cookbook Project - An online collection of the most influential and important American cookbooks from the 19th and early 20th century created by the Michigan State University Library and MSU Museum.

  • Food and Drink at the Pan-American Exposition - An online exhibit from the University at Buffalo Libraries to commemorate the centennial of the Pan-American Exposition, held in Buffalo in 1901. Categories of information on this site include: Restaurants, Company Exhibits, Cookbooks, Culture, Food and Health, Food Firsts and Marvels.

  • The Food Timeline - Created and maintained by the Morris County Library in New Jersey this site is organized by date, recipe, or agricultural advancement.

  • Global Destinations: The World on a Plate - From GlobalGournet.com a variety of country profiles including links to recipes associated with that country's or region's cuisine.

  • History and Legends of Favorite Foods - From "What's Cooking America" this site provides links to learn about the history of many different types of foods.

  • Key Ingredients: America by Food - An online educational companion to the Smithsonian Institution's traveling exhibition. Features of this site include: 500 Years of American Food, the American Cookbook Project, and Eating Across America.

  • Not by Bread Alone: America's Culinary Heritage - This site from from the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division at the Cornell University Library explores the influences and inventions that have shaped American food habits over the past 200 years.

  • Sally's Place: Focus on Ethnic Cuisine - An A to Z directory of food histories organized by country name. Some recipes are also included.

  • SAVEUR: Savor a World of Authentic Cuisine - This web page is an online companion to the print culinary-travel magazine Saveur. It provides information about the people and cultures behind culinary traditions around the globe.

  • Twentieth Century Food History Timeline - Lists of edibles and quaffables dating from 1872 to 2002.

Nutrition in Menu Planning

  • Food and Nutrition Information Center (FNIC) - Presents information on the Food Guide Pyramid, USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Nutrition Requirements for Various Age Groups (Lifecycle Nutrition).

  • Nutrition.Gov - A comprehensive site which provides access to a wide range of information on the following topics: food pyramid, food safety, health management, food facts, nutrition and health issues, as well as links to data and statistical sources, fact sheets, and newsletters.

  • Nutrient Data Laboratory - Provides information on food composition through the online USDA Nutrient Database for Standard Reference (Release 19), includes links to Measurement Conversion tables, and Reports on Individual Nutrient Value in Foods.

  • Nutrition Data Analysis Tool (NAT) - A web based computer program developed by the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Campaign, which gives you the ability to analyze foods eaten for various nutrients.

  • Diabetic Gourmet Magazine - An online magazine which presents information on health and nutrition for diabetics.

  • The Cook's Thesaurus - "A cooking encyclopedia that covers thousands of ingredients and kitchen tools. Entries include pictures, descriptions, synonyms, pronunciations, and suggested substitutions."

  • MenuPix.com - This site provides links to view menus of restaurants in select top U.S. cities.
  • OpenTable.com - Select a location from the "Featured Areas" category to access links to restaurants and their online menus.
  • Distinguished Restaurants of North America (DiRoNA) - To locate links to restaurant menus use the "enter name of the restaurant" search box or the "enter city name" and "state" drop-down boxes then press the "Go" button.

Online Menu Collections

  • Digital Menu Collection - The Los Angeles Public Library offers this  database of restaurant menus and images which is searchable by keyword, restaurant, cuisine & date. Many of the menus are available for you to view online and print.

  • Rare Menu Collection - A selection of menus from 1851 through 1943 made available online courtesy of the School of Hotel Administration, Cornell University.

  • The Menu Collection of the New York Public Library - A collection of images of over 5,000 menus ranging from 1851 through 1930. The collection is strongest for the period between 1890 and 1910. Organization is primarily chronological by date or range of dates.
